As a long-time supporter of the Texas Conference of Clubs, the Trinity River Bears is looking for assistance to help TCC acquire a much needed piece of medical equipment.
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Over 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year alone. It can happen to anyone, anytime, any-where, and at any age. An AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest, and is an easy to operate tool for someone with no medical background.
Time is of the essence: the average response time for first re-sponders once 911 is called is 8-12 minutes [usually much longer to reach TCC]. For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival is reduced approximately 10%.
What is an AED? AED stands for automated external defibrilla-tor. It is a medical device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm. If necessary, it delivers an electrical shock, known as defibrilla-tion, which helps the heart reestablish an effective rhythm.
Boy Leo of Discipline Corp is spearheading an effort to raise the funds to purchase one of the AED devices for the medical shed at the Texas Conference of Clubs. At the January 2014 meeting, Boy Leo presented the need for the AED device and various individuals and group members donated/pledged $750 toward the purchase. The price of the unit varies from supplier to supplier. The one pictured is featured on Amazon for $1,198. We will also need funds for maintenance of the unit: pads must be replaced after any usage or every two years at a cost of $65. The battery needs to be replaced every four years at an approximate cost of $150.
All donations toward the purchase and maintenance of the AED device for the Texas Conference of Clubs are welcome!! If you can help, please send your donation marked for the medical fund for AED purchase to Treasurer, Texas Conference of Clubs, Post Office Box 792561, San Antonio, Texas 78279-2561.
The Trinity Rivers Bears participate in a variety of activities in the Fort Worth Metroplex and in other areas in the State of Texas. A few of the activities in which we participate include:
Each year the Trinity River Bears hold a camping event at the Texas Conference of Clubs, located near the city of Cameron, Texas. The main focus of the camp out is a relaxed weekend of great camaraderie and fantastic food in the woods.
Check back for details of our 2014 event.
Many of our members are actively involved in assisting with the May and September LVLPWA camp outs at the Texas Conference of Clubs. The LVL PWA Camp Outs are for gay men living with HIV-AIDS. There is a mix of HIV positive and negative individuals who may be campers, volunteers, sponsors, partners of or friends of campers who are living with HIV-AIDS.
Campers come from many cities in Texas, and there is a large group from the Metroplex who attend the camp outs in May and September. The camp out is a valuable networking tool for those living with HIV-AIDS in the Metroplex, as well as the rest of Texas.
PWA Holiday Charities in Houston sponsors the camp out, raising money through fund raisers in the Metroplex and Houston and contributions through their web site. TCC donates the use of the camp site for the two events. Many Trinity River Bear members help during the camp outs, assisting with things like coordinating the camp out, food preparation, registration and lining up rides for those who need them.
The Trinity River Bears will be the host club the third Thursday of every month.
Come out and help TRB and Rhonda Mae raise some money for a great cause!
We are proud to be involved with the efforts of Rhonda Mae and the Wall of Food show. Every penny that is raised goes directly toward the purchase of AOC food pantry items.
The Trinity River Bears is a social organization providing bears and bear admirers a chance to meet and enjoy time together in a variety of environments and social situations. Formed in the late 1990s, the club has an average membership of about 20 individuals. We are proud to be an active supporting member of the Texas Conference of Clubs.
